Yamunotri – The Sacred Source of the Yamuna | Char Dham Yatra Guide
As I began my Char Dham Yatra, my first destination was Yamunotri, the birthplace of the sacred Yamuna River. Nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas, Yamunotri is not just a trek—it’s a spiritual ascent where every step feels like a prayer.
🕉 Spiritual Importance:
Yamunotri is the seat of Goddess Yamuna, daughter of the Sun God and sister of Yama (the god of death). Devotees believe that bathing in the Yamuna absolves sins and protects one from untimely death. The Yamunotri Temple marks the beginning of the Char Dham Yatra, symbolizing purity and protection.
🛤 How to Reach Yamunotri
By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (210 km). From there, taxis/buses connect to Hanuman Chatti.
By Train: The closest stations are Dehradun and Rishikesh, well-connected to Delhi, Haridwar, and Lucknow.
By Road: From Delhi, overnight buses and taxis reach Barkot. From Barkot, you continue to Janki Chatti (the trek base).
Trek: A 6 km trek from Janki Chatti leads you to Yamunotri Temple. Ponies and palanquins are available for elderly devotees.
