Kedarnath – The Sacred Jyotirlinga | Char Dham Yatra Guide

The most emotional part of my Char Dham Yatra was reaching Kedarnath, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The temple, set against the mighty Kedar peaks, feels like the gods themselves reside there.


🕉 Spiritual Importance:
Kedarnath is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and the most revered among the Panch Kedars. Mythology says the Pandavas built the temple to seek Shiva’s forgiveness after the Kurukshetra war. Worshipping at Kedarnath is believed to grant liberation (moksha), making it a spiritual pinnacle of the Char Dham Yatra.

🛤 How to Reach Kedarnath

  • By Air: Nearest airport is Dehradun (Jolly Grant, 238 km). Helicopter services run from Phata, Guptkashi, and Sitapur.

  • By Train: Closest railhead is Rishikesh (216 km).

  • By Road: Buses/taxis reach Gaurikund from Rishikesh/Haridwar.

  • Trek: 16 km trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath. Ponies, palkis, and helicopter rides are available.

🛏 Where to Stay

Budget pilgrims’ choices:

  • GMVN Rest Houses (Kedarnath, Gaurikund, Sonprayag).

  • Tent accommodations near Kedarnath temple.

  • Dharamshalas run by trusts and ashrams.

🍲 Where to Eat

  • Only pure veg satvic meals.

  • Langars by NGOs near the temple serve free prasad meals.

  • Small canteens for tea, khichdi, and simple food.

The final leg of my journey led me to  Badrinath , seated majestically by the Alaknanda River. The colorful temple, surrounded by snow peaks, fills the heart with serenity. 🕉 Spiritual Importance: Badrinath is dedicated to  Lord Vishnu , who is said to have meditated here in penance. The temple, nestled between the Nar and Narayan mountains, symbolizes salvation and spiritual wisdom. Pilgrims believe that a darshan of  Badri Vishal opens the path to moksha and eternal bliss. 🛤 How to Reach Badrinath By Air:  Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (317 km). By Train:  Rishikesh Railway Station (295 km). By Road:  Well connected to Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Joshimath. From Yamunotri, my journey carried me to  Gangotri , the source of the holy Ganges. The sound of the river echoes like a mantra, and the temple town feels alive with devotion. 🕉 Spiritual Importance: Gangotri is dedicated to  Goddess Ganga , the mother of mankind. According to legend, Lord Shiva released the mighty Ganga from his matted locks here, allowing her descent to Earth.
